What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
How much water to give your vegetable garden in the summertime. -
And, what is the reality?
I rarely water my summer vegetable garden. Plants in SD are used to drought. I have grown tomato plants 8 feet tall with no watering and no rain for 6 weeks. Sometimes you have to let the plants adapt to their environment. I grew 14 ft sunflowers without additional watering. -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
Shorts and tank top. I have a pair of sandals that I got a rummage sale 8 years ago for a quarter. They are my gardening shoes. -
Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
Ron Smith - North Dakota State University Extension Horticulturist. He offers great gardening and tree advice to people especially in the Dakotas. -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Let volunteers grow where they land. Chaos in a garden is just as interesting as designed placement. -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
I couldn't choose. -
What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
I have trouble with roses. I have one rose bush that has lived for years. Others I get die after the first year. I have not yet determined if it a soil issue or what but they do not like me. -
What is your favorite time in the garden?
Morning or late afternoon. -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
purple -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
I love to pull weeds. I love to watch the fruit blossoms open. I love to monitor the growth of plants each day in early summer. -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
My gardens are my favorite. I love to see others but mine are more intimate and interesting to me as I can change anything I want. -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
my mother and both grandmothers. They have instilled a sense of love of the earth. -
Gardening Dilemmas
