Gardening Ability
5 - Certified Master Gardener -
My 5 favorite plants are
Violets, roses, trees, perennials, annuals... Silly question! HOw could I possibly pick 5? -
What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
Roses need constant spraying, deadheading, fussing, feeding, chemicals etc. -
And, what is the reality?
Roses need the same tlc as any other plant and they much prefer good compost or manure tea, pick off the bugs and squash 'em IF THEY ARE ACTUALLY CAUSING DAMAGE! -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
short loose dress and apron, with my red garden shoes, wellies or tennies :) -
What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
What's that? -
And what's the answer?
That's a ..... it likes.... -
Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
Martha Stewart - she has done more to promote the virtues of heirloom/open pollinated plants, doing things the "old fashioned way" and from scratch and of working organically, seeking out inventive ideas for ecological gardening. Also, Rob Proctor! I can't say the man has ever written anything I disagree with - weird!! -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Think at least one hundred times before you seek to eradicate anything in the garden. Everything you do affects everything else that you do. Dandelions have as much right to live as you do. Stop buying patented plants, quit using pesticides and go organic. A little nibble here and there is no reason to go bat**** crazy with sprays and chemicals and the like. Just calm down. In short, THINK! If you have no respect for your garden ecosystem, you have no business gardening. Go surf the net or something. -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
violets or roses. I can't decide. -
What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
meconopsis from seed - not a great idea in this particular region, though, from plants, they actually do work here. -
What is your favorite time in the garden?
depends on the day... -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
This varies on a daily basis. Today it is pink. Yesterday it was orange. -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
planting and right now...probably in the herb garden -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
The forest on the family farm, just down the hill from me :) -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
Mum :) my mother taught me how to garden and always saw that I had a packet of seeds or a pack of plants or something to transplant as a wee girl. She taught me everything :) -
Gardening Dilemmas
rabbits and raccoons, which I never had problems with until I got neighbors, oh, and the monstrous forsythias taking over the world here. Hate 'em. -
What do you dislike most about gardening?
My serious lack of time and money ! The amazing amount of crap available in the garden center or nursery. -
What do you like most about gardening?
Having a worms' eye view of the workings of nature on every visible level and discovering new plants, new ways to use them and the incredible diversity of plant and animal nature we are blessed with in the northeast -
