  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
    Peonies cannot open without ants to eat the bud casing.
  • And, what is the reality?
    Peonies will open even if there are no ants around.
  • What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
    My Japanese gardener's pants with the rubber knee inserts. They're 15 years old and are going strong.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
    Iris because they come in so many varieties and bloom from late winter until late summer.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
    6 - 10 a.m. is my favorite time to work in the garden.
    7 - 10 p.m. is my favorite time to relax in the garden.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
    hot pink/fuschia
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
    Pruning is my favorite activity and the cement park bench my father got from a local state park, which we've situated between the hosta/fern garden and the iris garden is my favorite place.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
    Butchart Gardens in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
    My paternal grandfather had a tiny city lot, you know, narrow and deep? It was in Scranton, PA so the soil was black and like coal dust. His tiny little back yard was the showplace of the Petersburg area of Scranton. He built a huge trellis, painted white, and had gorgeous red climbing roses, he had a trellis on the back of the house with Heavenly Blue Morning Glories growing up it, rose bushes and perennials poked in all along th e borders of his little yard, and Johnny Jump Ups popping up between all the slate sidewalk blocks. Right int he middle of this little piece of heaven he had a mound that was about 5' x 8' and he build a little pond in the middle that was the exact outline of Lake Ariel, in Wayne Co., PA. In this pond were little gold fish and water lilies and all around the outside were lovely perennials. From the time I could walk he would walk me around his garden and tell me about all the plants. He bought me a tiny brass watering/sprinkling can and would have me water the plants along side him.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
    1) Keeping the pachysandra bed under our Honey Locust looking lovely.

    2) Keeping the mulch from washing off our mounded beds (what was I thinking 20 years ago when I had my husband haul in all that top soil, dig all those beds and mound them?!?).

    3) Keeping all those beds weeded.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
    Routine maintenance (Spring clean up, mulching), especially during July & August.

    Creating beautiful spaces, nurturing life, being outside in Spring and Fall, anticipation of growth and change.
