Landscape Design and Balance...
Often when one thinks of balance or symmetry it is easy to conjure images that represent the ideas. With balance it's a skill that is nearly ubiquitous. The concept covers ideas from standing and walking about to the abstract idea of balancing our time or priorities.

With symmetry we often imagine the orientation of an object. Its similar in underlying feel to balance but has deeper implications. In some ways symmetry is visual such as the delicate balance of butterflies. In other forms symmetry may be invisible but is crucial as with the fine tuned balance of a magnificent Cypress trees that dot the coast of Monterey California.

The concept of the effective application of these two elements of nature in interesting landscape design is a fundamental goal of Urban Landscape. Symmetrical balance or in design can have visual implications that create the sense of flow and cadence to architecture. Balanced lines move the eye seamlessly from one design element to the next creating ease and a subconscious comfort. Often individuals when immersed in a symmetrically balanced landscape may not readily be able to articulate what creates the calm, but intuitively recognize the unity of the design.
