  • Gardening Background

  • Biographical Information
Started The Growers Exchange in 1985. An urban garden center in the Carytown shopping district.
Began growing in our Charles City greenhouses, supplied our own store and wholesale accts. At this time we grew mostly flowering plants; herbs were a spring crop only. At the time there was low demand for herbs.
In 2005 the store was closed and we began The Growers Exchange.com, an online herb nursery.
Has managed a 600 ac. farm since 1995, keeping cows, chickens, etc. Also have 2000 tree fruit orchard.

  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
Gardening is too complicated to start.
  • And, what is the reality?
    Start small
  • What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
    Blue jeans
  • What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
How can a garden change my life?
  • And what's the answer?
Commit to it and develop an understanding of the plants and critters that live there. There is great comfort in knowing we are not alone.
  • Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
Andre Viette, WRVA radio, " In the Garden" on Saturday mornings.
  • Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Your garden should be your sanctuary from the real world. If you find yourself stressing over your garden, you have missed the point.
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
  • What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
I would love to have palm trees for outside. Unfortunately they are too big to keep over winter.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
That would be a toss up. And would depend on which happens soonest. First light, full moon, and twilight. I think I like the full moon because it is like a longer version of the other two. Muted light that changes everything. One is beginning the other ending; only to begin again.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
Yellow is my favorite color in the garden. Yellow is the color of North America in summer. And what could be better than that! Starting with Rudbeckia and ending with Helianthus, a parade of yellow flowers all summer long.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
Planting is by far my most favored garden chore. It is so rewarding, knowing the little plants will soon grow into something spectacular!
I hang out down by the compost area a lot. It is away from the house and the chickens are down there for company.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
he James River Park system allows people access to the river. Huge sculpted boulders surrounded by rushing water. Natures garden is so relaxing; there is no work to do!
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
The owner of the first greenhouse I worked in was such a laid back guy, I knew I had chosen the right career. Gilbert Miles, thanks for your cool attitude and willingness to share plant knowledge.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
My yard at home was covered in ivy. In the twenty or so years living there, I have eliminated almost all ivy. So I guess you could say I have been in a life and death struggle with ivy for most of my gardening career.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
    digging in wet soil.
  • What do you like most about gardening?
I like digging in the soil.
