  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
    This is the kind of question that make heads explode... but I'll play along and say Japanese maple. Love the colors, the change of seasons.
  • What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
    I'm afraid of roses, though I know it is an irrational fear. I think the plant I've had the most trouble with are annual flowers. I know that's general, but the cycle seems to be: plant, die. That's the natural order of things, I know, but it seems there should be an intermediate stage: plant, thrive, die.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
    Right before sunset. The day is winding down, the light is pretty, fragrance seems to carry.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
    Green. Means something is going right!
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
    Favorite activity is probably watering. I do enjoy pruning as well.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
    San Francisco Botanical Garden or the Luther Burbank garden.
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
    My neighbor growing up, Joan Niebank. She managed to grow a lovely English garden in a heavily wooded Northern California town.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
    Planting in a small, urban area that is always 10-20 degrees hotter than the actual temperature. Hard to grow things that are always at risk of getting scorched.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
    Feeling like I could have done more for a plant that just isn't making it.
  • What do you like most about gardening?
    Being outdoors, nurturing, seeing plants change over time... the list goes on and on.
  • Favorite Nursery
    Three Bee's Nursery in San Francisco. It's a little neighborhood nursery in and amongst a lot of concrete. Little oasis in my old neighborhood. In San Diego, I usually split time between Walter Andersen's and Mission Hills.
