Under Construction

Far, far too hot to continue in either the garden or with the worms! Oh, for the cool days of June!

What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
Pruning will halt plant growth. -
And, what is the reality?
I have learned it only spurs the plants on to re-grow. -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
Shorts, long sleeves and my hat and gloves. -
What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
Why don't you have grass and how is it that your garden is so lush and blooming all year long? -
And what's the answer?
Total turf reduction and 10" of mulch every where. Once the mulch is gone and becomes soil I add more. It is wonderful to reduce weeds, reduce the use of water and gives a graceful background for the plants. -
Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
I do not have one at present. -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Once I decide on a new plant I research it as much as I can. After I have been able to find it I place it in the garden in the spot I hope it will do well. If it doesn't look like that is the place for it, as in the plant is not happy, I move it to another place until I find the place it will be planted. I have learned to do this after losing a few great plants. -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
Salivas -
What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
Gardenias. I think it is the proximity to the ocean as I am 1.5 miles from it and the marine layer is in most nights. -
What is your favorite time in the garden?
Early morning or dusk -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
Blue -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
By the falls, creek and pond in the back garden here. -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Kew Gardens in England. They are fabulous. -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My Dad. He taught me that no job was without it's dignity, even taking the tomato worms off the plants. -
Gardening Dilemmas
I am looking to have raised beds that are waist height. So far they are all to expensive for me and I shall have to remove the railroad ties I have in now and have had since 1987! -
