  • Gardening Background

  • Biographical Information
Born and Raised in Denver. I love it here. However, I have considered a possible move to one of the New England states at some point. It's so beautiful up there. I bet they don't have nearly the garden soil and lack-of-moisture issues we have here.

  • My 5 favorite plants are
I don't have any specific favorites just yet. I love my Lemon Balm plant and I'm particularly fond of my sage patch. I really like garlic chives, too. They smell good and have those pretty purple flowers. If I can eat it or it smells really good - I like it.
  • What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
If you just add water and pull weeds, it will grow.
  • And, what is the reality?
You have to fertilize, prune, water, amend soil, pull weeds, pull weeds some more, mulch, pull more weeds, water, water again -- and if you're consistent and the day job doesn't interfere -- THEN it will grow.
  • What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
T-shirt and jeans with a dorky hat and gloves.
  • What is the one question about gardening you would really like people to ask you?
Why do you keep trying when you can't get different plants to perform consistently?
  • And what's the answer?
Because I'm stubborn that way, and it's a challenge. I like a challenge.
  • Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
    It's not a garden -- it's an adventure!
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
Tomatos. They are so pretty, they have a lovely scent, and they taste so delicious.
  • What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
Pumpkins. Just one year I'd like to have a beautiful, big pumpkin patch. I don't know why - I just love pumpkins.
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
Late evening, just before the sun goes down. All the bees are gone and things are quiet.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
Green. I mean - seriously, you've been to Colorado - right? This place is like a barren wasteland. Mountain desert is about right.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
I love watering, fertilizing, and pruning.
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
No one really. I'm a lone wolf. But my parents always had a home vegetable garden when we were kids.
  • Gardening Dilemmas
Living on the front range of the rockies is no picnic when it comes to gardening. One year I'll have a beautiful vegetable garden replete with bountiful harvest. The next year - I'm lucky to get some beans, a few tomatos, and a cucumber. There's also the matter of Thunder the Wonder Racoon. Yeah - racoons need to eat, too. But did she have to eat all my corn? Yep.
  • What do you dislike most about gardening?
Weeds, global warming, and poor soil!
  • What do you like most about gardening?
I love the satisfaction of planting something and watching it grow. I also love the feeling of my hands buried wrist deep in soil.
  • Favorite Nursery
I don't have a lot to choose from in my area. There are two or three near me and they are all somewhat adequate. I can never find everything I want in one place.
