whiteflies

Are the whiteflies showing up again? I hadn't heard. The only two plants I have that were bothered by this were the perennial morning glory and rose of Sharon. I've not had them come back since using the worm castings and that was several years ago. Thank Loren Nancarrow...he always comes up with good tips!

True whiteflies have a generation period of 3 days, meaning: those born today will procreate to produce young in 3 days. To eliminate them from a breeding area, it is critical to spray the plant (underside and top) and the ground for 4 days in a row. Further, some strains of whiteflies have become immune to some pesticides -- esp. butinols. It is recommended that you spray with 4 different pesticides on each of the 4 days. Hibiscus lovers can find relief by purchasing one of the Calif. breed varieties that do not attract whiteflies. Fushia lovers simply have to find some middle ground between a spray program and whiteflies.

I have white flies all over my Meyer Lemon tree and mexican lime. I have tried neem oil, sinosad and garlic barrier. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There are few things that kill whiteflies on contact -- although the little buggers do die within an hour after contact with most pesticides. IMPORTANT:
[1] you need to spray 4 days in a row - topside, underside, and ground. Then again in two weeks when they come back.
[2] I rotate through \"Green Light Fruit Tree Spray (Walter Andersen, Poway)\", \"Bayer PowerForce Insecticide (Cyfluthrin)\", \"Spectracide Immunnox with pesticide\", \"Liqui-Cop\".
[3] Do not over-concentrate the mixtures -- you could damage your plants.
[4] Spinosaid is a great product, but understand that it is a bacteria that attacks eggs and does not kill whitefly adults. I apply it six times per year (the legal limit) -- every six weeks starting in March. It is very good at controlling citrus leaf miner when used alternately with \"Green Light Fruit Tree Spray\".
