STORING YOUR FOOD FOR WINTER! Keep your veggie harvest in prime condition with these few handy storage tips! Air circulation is number 1! Allow good air movement around your vegetables to prevent the onset of rot. Garlic, onions, potatoes and other crops can be stored in mesh or burlap bags. Hang the bags to improve airflow around the produce and to avoid bruising. Storage tomatoes can be ripened indoors. Make sure the fruit is not touching each other. Wrap each tomato gently in newspaper and arrange them in a single layer in nursery flats. Most root crops such as carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, etc. can stay in the ground until you’re ready to
use them. If you live in an especially cold region, mulch the ground heavily to protect the crops from freezing. Once you harvest the roots cut off the tops right away. Check your veggies frequently to make sure it’s in good condition, and remove anything that shows signs of spoilage. Try drying veggies like tomatoes and peppers. Grind into powder or store whole in an air-tight container with a desiccant package.
