  • My 5 favorite plants are
Herbs - they are the most versatile group of plants and great fun to smell. Many also add interesting tastes to my poor culinary dishes.
So the 5 favorite would be mint, oregano, thyme, chives and parsley
  • If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
Betony - because it will grow everywhere I have put it.
  • What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
sweet peas - I love them but American spring is too short and they wilt before they can flower. I am trying a fall crop now that we are in the south to see if that works better
  • What is your favorite time in the garden?
First thing in the morning with a cup of tea.
  • What is your favorite color in the garden?
every color that a flower can make - except perhaps some of the new hybrids that scream red or yellow when the natural color is pink or white.
  • What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
walking around the garden in the morning to see what is new, what is blooming and what insects are visiting the garden.
  • What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
The Gardens of Heligan in St Austell England. This is a garden that was a place to visit in the 19th century, but left to go into ruins. Fortunately it was found, and is being put back together. The tropical ravine is something to see!
  • What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My Dad - he showed me how to prune a rose, then set me free on the next 50 or so, with the message "you cannot kill them, but you can make a mess of them". He also gave us our first tomato plant (30 yrs ago in England) which we planted by digging a hole with a spoon.
