Not sure why I'm the first to respond, but I'll give it a try. Yes, most succulents and cactus do not like to be 'wet' but they all need some water. It is difficult to pinpoint what was going on, there is not a lot to go on. How large were the plants? How large are the containers? Clay or Plastic? You are in Arizona (I think) it is generally warmer and dry in most of that state. (not sure where you are exactly) Anyway the best advice I can give you is, you should put your finger into the soil frequently to 'feel' how much moisture there is in the soil, to about a 1" to 2" depth, when it starts to feel a little dry, you should water the plant. If it feels pretty moist, wait a few days and check again. Just don't keep them wet and don't let them get bone dry. How often did you water in those two months, and how much water did you put on? I'm just thinking they did not get enough water, it does not 'sound' like they have been over watered. The white part, you need to describe better please.
I agree with Mitch, Dymondia is getting more popular as people get to know it. It is not the fastest growing groundcover, but it is one of the very lowest and works well as a grass lawn replacement. It does not take as much water as many other groundcovers or lawns, BUT YOU MUST BE SURE TO GIVE IT REGULAR IRRIGATIONS WHEN FIRST PLANTED. After it is established (3 months or so) you can slowly reduce the amount of water used. Very low growing, interesting grey-green foliage and small 1/2" yellow blooms. NO MOWING is also a great benifit!
Hi Walter,
I hope all is well. I was down at your place last week and it was really hopping!

I'm looking for someone to help with the plant care system I'm always talking about. What I'm looking for is someone who can write about plant care in a number of formats and may be interested in being a limited partner in theMulch. I really need someone that has that "entrepreneurial" spirit and would b

What is a garden myth you hear frequently which you know is untrue?
Feed your Staghorn fern Banannas -- YOU eat the Banannas and feed the Staghorns REAL plant food, like Gro Power, they will do much better, so will you, Banannas are good for you. -
And, what is the reality?
When I see them, those fed with Banannas they are just crisp dried up 'things' I don't think they do anything but make the person who threw it up there feel better. They need nitrogen, monkeys need Banannas! -
What is your favorite gardening outfit or costume?
Just old jeans, most have holes somewhere. Crappy shoes and a shirt to match. -
Who is your own favorite gardening personality on TV, radio or in print? Why?
Used to be Tom P. but he is moving :-( Actally he is the only one I watched on a regualar/semi-regualar basis. (I see Top P. is in re-runs so that is nice) -
Do you have a gardening philosophy you would like to share with other gardeners? What is it?
Try it, if you don't like if, or it does not like you, don't bother with it any more. Try something else. There are a lot of plants you can never grow all of them just try. -
If you could grow only one plant, what would it be?
You can't grow just one. -
What plant have you tried to grow that has given you the most trouble? Or, what plant would you like to grow and can't, and why?
Orchids (except Cymbidum) are a waste of my time and energy. I just don't do well with most of them. Let others grow them I do enjoy that. -
What is your favorite time in the garden?
Morning, I think, before I'm too tired to do it. -
What is your favorite color in the garden?
This is difficult, for sure it is not brown. -
What is your favorite place or activity in the garden?
Where there is dirt. (I guess I should say 'soil' it sounds better, but your hands don't get 'soily' they get 'dirty') But righ now my front yard looks the best, so it is probably my favorite. Still working on the back, it is never done. That is a good thing, I think. -
What is your favorite public or private garden in the world? Why?
Huntington is my favorite so far. Buchard Gardens on Victoria Island is maybe an equal. Wellington N.Z. has a terrific rose garden, probably the best I have see. Still checking though. Some are very dissapointing, when you go out of your way, then you say 'why did I waste my time?' Just did that near Salt Lake City Aug 08 wast of time. -
What individual has influenced your gardening interest the most? How?
My father, no question -
Gardening Dilemmas
What do I do with all of the fan palm leaves that fell of in the storm? -
What do you dislike most about gardening?
Hate taking out plants that died and wonder why they died. Hate trimming things that are too high. Hate hauling trash. Hate really big weeds that I put off 'until tomorrow'. -
What do you like most about gardening?
When I am gardening I tend to forget (or put way on the back burner) all of the horrible things going on. It is pretty much just me and what ever I am tending to. Could even be a weed! -
