Heuchera spp.
Heuchera AlumrootMost Heucheras grown for their colorful flowers do well in coastal Southern California -- in fact, some are actually hybrids of species native to nearby regions. However, many of the newer Heuchera hybrids grown mostly for their colorful foliage may be short-lived, due to warm summers, lack of winter chill, and alkaline irrigation water. Plant them in partial to full shade for best results.

Spinacia oleracea
Spinach Garden SpinachIn coastal Southern California, spinach is planted from seed from September through March. Be sure to choose a non-bolting heat-resistant variety. Since spinach matures in around 7 weeks from seed, it is best to plant a small amount of seed at weekly intervals during the fall and winter in order to insure harvest throughout the growing season.

Platycerium superbum
Staghorn FernPlatycerium is the family of ferns we know as 'Stag Horn Ferns'. They are native to different parts of the world, mostly Australia, Africa, South America, New Guinea and Southeast Asia. Most are quite easy to grow in southern California, requiring only a little extra care. Most people grow them on boards of Cedar or Redwood. These ferns will usually grow well if placed in an area with part shade most of the day. A little 'full sun' is usually OK for just an hour or two, but if they get too much sun their leaves may be a little yellow, a lot of sun will burn the leaves. As you get further inland, and thus into hotter and dryer weather, they will require more shade.
