General Information
The many \"Wild Buckwheats\" in the genus Eriogonum are native throughout the West; however, the few sold in most nurseries are ones native to Coastal California. Of these, two of the large shrubby species native to the California Channel Islands always merit attention in the drought-tolerant garden. Both Eriogonum giganteum and Eriogonum arborescens grow into good-sized shrubs, with handsome gray-green to grayish white foliage and clusters of pale-pink to rose-pink flowers in late spring and summer. They thrive in well-drained, gravelly soils, and can be stunning in mixed shrubby plantings on dry hillsides.
