Herb of Christmas - Rosemary
With the holiday season fast approaching, an herb of great importance is rosemary. It is easily grown in a pot, has a wonderful piney scent, and can be sheared or trained onto a frame for the perfect "Christmas Tree" shape. It was also an herb associated with Mary and was traditionally used in church decorations. Here are some stories about rosemary, both old and new, from some of our favorite authors.
"It was our custom to bring in the big rosemaries at the beginning of Christmas....It was also part of our Christmas
lecture to tell about the transforming of the white flowers
to blue when the Virgin's cloak was withdrawn from the bush
that had sheltered the Holy Family. I had just finished my
story when a ripple of laughter from the audience caused me
to give the rosemary group more than a causal glance. One
large plant that was in bud, had, in the heat of the room,
burst into bloom and it was pure white!"
Adelma Simmons, from The World Of Rosemary, 1983
"Nearly every inhabitant of the herb garden is rich in
historic and romantic interest. The legends about that
lovable herb, rosemary, would fill a book. The Sicilian
peasants tell one that the baby fairies are put to sleep in
rosemary flowers, and once one has heard this saying it is
impossible to look at the flowers without realising what
lovely cradles they make for baby fairies."
Eleanour Sinclair Rhode, The Making Of A Herb Garden, 1927
"I plant rosemary all over the garden, so pleasant is it to
know that at every few steps one may draw the kindly
branches through one's hand, and have the enjoyment of their
incomparable incense."
Gertrude Jekyll, from Home And Garden, 1900
“It growth neither in the fields nor gardens of the Easterne
cold countries, but it is carefully and curiously kept in
pots, set into stoves and cellers, against the injuries of
their cold winters.”
John Gerard, Gerard’s Herball, 1636
"It's the elder statesman of our houseplants, this rosemary.
I can't remember when we bought it, but it's at least ten
years old, maybe fifteen. I curl up on the couch with the
newspaper, or a book; every so often I run my hand across
the plant, inhale the fragrance, and think of summer."
Alberta Eiseman in The Herb Grower Magazine, 1979
We offer 20 rosemary varieties.
