George Washington was a general, a president, and a farmer, presiding

over the fields of Mt. Vernon. The story of young Washington and the cherry tree is a myth, but cherries are very real and very tasty. Grow your own delicious harvest with any of our sweet or sour varieties.

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is known as much for its expansive garden as for Jefferson's unique architecture. Jefferson was an avid collector, experimenting with many trees, shrubs, vines, and perennials from the New World as well as the old. Some of the apple trees he grew are still grown and treasured. Plant your own link to the past with our Organic Heirloom Apple Trees.

Lewis and Clark, in the epic expedition authorized by Jefferson, discovered 170 plants new to science. By crossing several different species (including one observed by Lewis and Clark), breeders are creating stunning new coneflowers that expand the color range of this formerly pink-only wildflower. Garden-worthy varieties now show off yellow, white, orange, and red flowers, plus numerous shades of pink. Try one of the unique, fluffy double varieties for a flower form you won't find anywhere else!

GARDENERS NOTEBOOK

In much of the country, it's still too early to plant in the vegetable garden – but it's NOT too early to try a warming trick we learned in a Master Gardener class. Layer black plastic over the bed(s) you'd like to plant first. Allow the plastic to absorb the sun for at least three weeks. When you remove the cover, you'll likely find that weeds have sprouted – and died for lack of sunlight. If you're careful not to disturb the soil while planting, this technique helps manage weeds all season. Worth a try!
