Employee Spotlight
This month we are pleased to feature Kirk Neuroth, one of our talented plant technicians. After receiving his degree in Plant and Soil Sciences, Kirk has worked in many areas of plantscaping, design and production. He has been schooled in the specialty art of growing and maintaining Fruit Trees.

In his spare time, Kirk volunteers at the Cuyamaca College Botanical Garden. To see more about this project visit www.thegarden.org.  He also enjoys his own home garden where he is currently harvesting onions, artichokes and lettuce.

Make sure you attend our Spring Plant Sale and Open House on Saturday, March 24 to attend one of Kirk's workshops. His knowledge of plants and all things green will help you and your garden be ready to welcome Spring!

Kirk provides wonderful service to our customers by making sure their green walls and interior and exterior plants are happy and hearty! He is looking forward to working on more wall projects and rooftop gardens.

Thanks Kirk, for all your hard work and dedication!

Dear Friends of the Mulch,
Jim MumfordAs we charge into the new year, business continues to grow and blossom. I'm very proud of our teams accomplishments last year, and particularly pleased that we hit all of our sales goals. It's been a few years since we could be aggressive in our projections and actually achieve our objectives. Now I just wish we kept more at the end of the day... and paid less taxes!

It looks like green roofs and living walls are here to stay based upon the number of inquiries, bids, projects and examples in southern California that have crossed my desk. Just about every University and College have a green roof or one planned, the new barracks at Camp Pendleton, the design for the new convention center, Hospitals, new housing and shopping centers. Living Walls are going in and being planned for restaurants and homes as well as corporate lobbies... finally the development and design communities are recognizing the myriad of benefits from authentically green buildings.

Among other achievements last year: our work (and that of Landscape Architect Greg Nowell) at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law was recognized by an Orchid award, we installed a large green wall at the new SDG&E Energy Innovation Center, gorgeous green walls in Qualcomm headquarters lobby, a green wall at the Bressi Ranch ActivCare Senior Center, edible green walls at Terra Restaurant in La Mesa and Mario Batali's Pizzeria Mozza in Newport Beach, numerous green walls in residences and started the green roof portion of the Fallen Star art installation at UCSD. I spoke at numerous events and even travelled as far as Columbus Ohio to speak on living walls at the OFA Conference, I had one of my talks certified to give Continuing Education Units (CEU's) and we won numerous awards for our work. We have a new look for our websites and had our first ever bowling party for employees (a ton of fun!) and we even bought a new manly-man contractors truck.

One of my favorite accolades of the year was being named one of San Diego's "Top Influentials in 2011" by the San Diego Daily Transcript. You know I couldn't have accomplished this without my team.

Our Open House this March will be a little different... Friday afternoon the 23rd we will be open to viewing the green roof and all of our living wall systems - along with our plant sale. Saturday morning we will be charging $10 to attend a series of 20 minute workshops: "How to Plant Your Own Green Wall", "Green Pest Control," and "Growing Vegetables Hydroponically." If you buy $25 of plants, the workshops are free.

Much has changed since last fall, come out and see what's growing!

Best regards,

Jim Mumford

GreenScaped Buildings Helps Complete "Fallen Star"
Fallen Star UCSD
The exciting addition to UCSD's Stuart Art Collection is finally completed! Artist Do Ho Suh has created a small version of a New England-style cottage and placed it on what looks to be a precarious location. But all is safe and secure thanks to the many engineers and project help (including Greenscaped Buildings!) that made the artists' vision a reality.

Greenscaped Buildings proudly partnered with UCSD and Mr. Suh to provide plants and greenery for the Martha's Vineyard-style cottage. Greenscaped Buildings is planting east-coast type plants including Virginia Creeper, Wisteria and even a decorative Plum Tree. So many individuals have helped in the effort to bring the artists' work to life....imagine the logistics of such a project with big cranes, multiple contractors, tight spaces, living greenery, tons of soil and cement....all 7 stories up! You get the idea!!

Small groups will be able to gather at the house and garden area. For more information please go to  http://stuartcollection.ucsd.edu

A huge congratulations to our Project Manager, Steve Codraro, on a complicated and demanding job well done.

Holiday Tree Glee
Horton Tree 2011
Horton Plaza
Christmas Tree

For the 8th year, the staff at Good Earth Plants and GreenScaped Buildings proudly provided décor for the Horton Plaza 2011 Holiday on Ice tree. Decorated with hundreds of ornaments and thousands of lights, our staff braved wind and weather to make sure the 20 foot tall tree stood proudly. The ice skating rink and festive holiday arena were created to benefit the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.

We are already planning for the 2012 tree and looking forward to helping the kids at Rady Children's Hospital.
