At 20-25-ft, the Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata) is taller and blooms later than the more familiar common lilac. It produces its panicles of fragrant, creamy flowers over a long period in June and early July, long after regular lilacs are spent. Named Iowa Tree of the Year in 2002, Japanese Tree Lilac is well adapted to urban conditions, requires little maintenance, and makes a lovely, compact street tree or small specimen tree.

Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is one of the first small trees to bloom in spring, when it's covered in fragrant, 3-4-in., star-shaped white flowers. Growing slowly to 15-20-ft tall, the Star Magnolia won't outgrow its place in the landscape. Lovely as a specimen or part of a mixed planting along a fence line.

Flowers

Woody plants that flower in spring are plentiful, harder to find in summer. American Sentry® Linden (Tilia americana) is a narrow upright tree with a lot going for it. It can provide shade to small properties. Bees love its intensely fragrant yellow flowers that appear in early summer. And its fall color is a handsome blend of orange, red and gold.

For profuse color over a very long bloom season in late summer, nothing beats Crape Myrtles. These vase-shaped, multi-stemmed, small trees are more commonly found in warmer parts of the country, but recent breeding work at the U.S. National Arboretum has produced varieties hardy to USDA Zone 6, and some to Zone 5 (-20° F. average winter minimum temperature). 'Hopi' (Lagerstroemia indica 'Hopi,) is one of the hardiest, reliably delivering abundant clusters of rich pink blooms for many weeks.

Fruit
From apples to tangerines, browse our selection of fruit-bearing trees. Most of these trees produce beautiful spring blooms, followed by succulent fruit. Apples, apricots, cherries, plums, peaches, pears—the hardest part will be limiting your choices. Grow more in less space when you choose from semi-dwarf rootstock.
If you enjoy sharing your landscape with birds and other wildlife, consider planting trees that will provide them with fruit, nuts or seeds. One of our favorites is 'Autumn Brilliance' Serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance'). Easy to grow in full sun to part shade, 'Autumn Brilliance' blooms very early in the spring, before the trees leaf out. Its blueberry-like berries are one of the first fruits to ripen and an important food source for many birds. This selection has gorgeous fall color, too. A winner in every way.

Foliage Color
Although we can be forgiven for focusing on flowers, we shouldn't neglect fall foliage color in the landscape. Many trees provide multiple seasons of interest and go out with a bang—an explosion of scarlet, orange, yellow or purple foliage. One of the most reliable trees for fall color is the red maple. 'Autumn Flame' (Acer rubrum 'Autumn Flame') is the first to turn scarlet, starting the fall foliage season off with a blaze of color.
