Cold Snap Does Me In!

OUCH!  I knew it was going to be cold but oh man, these past few days were too much! Even on the coast, where I don't usually have to worry about frost, my garden took a beating.  According to www.weather.com it got down to 35 degrees and I wasn't prepared.  I've gardened in zone 24 for the last 15 years and I never really paid much attention to occassional frost warnings, but this time I should have!

I even listened to Garden Compass Radio show and they kept warning everyone, and for some reason it just never sunk in.  Here's a photo of my poor Yukon Gold potatos.  I never even considered that potatos would be hurt by cold, I though "they grow up in Idaho, there's NO WAY they'd freeze here".  Well I was certainly wrong. avoburn

I stopped feeling sorry for myself though after I went to visit one of our new Garden Experts Oscar Olson. Oscar specializes in growing Platycerium ferns and he has hundreds growing outside and he had a lot of damage. The damage wasn't limited to his wonderful ferns, it just wiped out all sorts of citrus and avocado trees - it looked like someone took a huge blow torch to his whole back yard.  I just hope they recover! Be sure to read more about Oscar in our Garden Experts section of the Mulch.

Here's to looking forward to spring!
