Favorite Shrubs
- Hazelnut Shrub - Corylus americana
The hazelnut shrub is an MN native, extremely hardy, works in sun and part shade. Has a great yellow fall color and edible nuts that are popular with wildlife. If you can beat the wildlife to the nuts, they are good to eat (or in a vodka gimlet).

- Pagoda Dogwood - Cornus alternifolia
Pagoda Dogwood is native to the MN woodlands. A great specimen small tree, it has horizontal, vaguely japanese looking branching, with white spring flowers and fruit held upright with red pedicels. Another very popular bird plant. Additional Details
- Fragrant sumac. The straight native R. aromatica, is about 6' tall and when planted in groups, forms a wonderful thicket. Unlike other sumacs, this one does not sucker. The leaves have a lemony fragrance, and a fruit that is loved by birds. This is a great shrub for bird habitat. The cultivar 'gro-low' is a dwarf variety that is great for smaller plantings. This shrub gets very wide and is perfect for erosion control or other dry, tough situations. It always looks great, and works in sun or shade with reddish, orange fall color.
