Favorite Shrubs & Perennials with Red Color
Red Barberry - Berberis thunbergii 'atropurprea'
This thorny, rugged shrub makes an excellent hedge and may be sheared to shape. Deep red-burgundy foliage in full sun. Fall color is a brilliant crimson-red. Drought tolerant. The sharp thorns are a very good deterrent to those who like to "cut through" a hedge; I use it for corner properties to keep dogs, and people off the lawns.

Sticks on Fire - Euphorbia tirucalli
'Sticks on Fire' is a member of the succulent Euphorbiaceae family and is a bright salmon rose, pink color. The more common variety seen it the all-green Pencil tree. Fast growing with single or multiple trunks with a tangle of pencil-thin succulent branches. Only leaves are on the end of the growing tip. Full sun intensifies the color.

- Japanese Blood Grass - Imperata cylindrica 'Rubra'
Nice accent grass; forms a clump 1 to 2 feet tall, 1 foot wide. Leaves sprout green from base pf plant turining intense red in summer and fall. Plant in borders or anywhere in full sun. Mow down in winter for new blades. Spreads slowly by underground runners.

Loropetulum chinense
Evergreen shrub; 6 to 10 feet high, very neat and compact with dark, red-purple foliage and pink flowers, and can be trimmed to any size or shape. My favorite is 'Razzleberri', or 'Burgundy'.

- Dusty Miller - Senecio cineraria
An old stand-by in the garden for silver color, and it's yellow blooms. I like to cut off the yellow blooms and showcase the foliage. Great lit at night down in front of darker green plants. Plant in a border situation or massive bedding area; contrasts nicely with deep purples, such as Verbena, and the reds of Scarlet Salvias. Full sun, little to moderate water. Keep on the dry side.
