Favorite Grasses

  • Little Bluestem - Schizachyrium scoparium
Little Bluestem grass is a mid size grass reaching 2-3 feet tall.  Gorgeous en mass, orange fall color, and great winter interest.  This plant is perfect for erosion control on a slope in a dry, sunny area.  The birds love the seed and habitat it provides.  A MN native grass.
    Additional Details

  • Indian Grass - Sorghastrum nutans
Indian grass.  Give this plant lots of room and plant en masse.  Another MN native grass, this grass will reach 5 to 6 feet tall and works well in a large area paired with Big Bluestem grass.  Beautiful yellow pollen in the spring.  The birds love the seed and habitat.
    Additional Details

  • Big Bluestem Grass - Andropogon gerardii
Big Bluestem grass.  A MN native that gets as tall as the above grass.  Great for a wetter area, although it is drought tolerant.  I use this grass in upland lakeshore restoration plantings with Indian grass.
    Additional Details

  • Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'
A great grass for a vertical, architectural look.  This grass stays in place, is about 4 feet tall with a light colored seed head.  Perfect for MN where winter interest is needed.
  • Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’
Variegated Japanese Forest grass.  Although often labeled as zone 5, this grass has always come back for me in zone 4.  I love the contrast of the chartreuse foliage, works well in shade, and drought tolerant.
