Rudbeckia spp.

The North American genus Rudbeckia has given us many showy, cold-hardy garden perennials that brighten flower borders in rudbeckia_nitida_opt.jpgevery climate zone. These include the popular Black-eyed Susans and Gloriosa Daisies (R. hirta hybrids), which are short-lived perennials that are often grown as annuals because they bloom quickly from seed. Other Rudbeckias are longer-lived perennials that include the vigorous Rudbeckia fulgida hybrids and a number of types of Coneflowers.

All Rudbeckias bloom in summer and fall, with large and colorful yellow to orange daisies with showy dark centers. They love warm summers, are fast and easy to grow in full sun in any reasonable soil, and look best with regular watering and fertilizing. Grow them for their bright flower show, use them as cut flowers, and enjoy them as they attract many butterflies to your garden.
