Bird-of-paradise
Plant Care Instructions By Steve Brigham

Although it is native to South Africa, the Bird-Of Paradise plant is practically emblematic of coastal Southern California, and is the official city flower of Los Angeles. In frost-free areas, it is easy to grow both in the ground and in containers, and blooms best when fertilized regularly. In areas where frosts occur, it needs frost protection, for although it will withstand occasional mild frosts, it is slow to recover from strong or repeated frosts.
